Birmingham museum is in the process of developing a major new wing of galleries celebrating the history and significance of Birmingham and its people. 
 
The galleries will show how the city of Birmingham is a reflection of the self-reliance, creativity, inventiveness and hard work of its people - rich and poor - over many generations.  They will focus on the development of the city from mediaeval times to 1945, and convey Birmingham’s past through the personal stories of key individuals.
 
Rotating displays will explore the character and identity of Birmingham and its people today, and their memories of Birmingham’s more recent past. Birmingham people will be able to play a leading role in the development of the galleries, through a comprehensive programme of community events and consultations. An exciting schools programme accompanying the displays will provide access to a great new local history resource for all ages.
 
The project will see the conservation and display of over 2000 objects from Birmingham Museums and Art Gallerys' nationally significant collections, as well as the renovation of new and existing galleries in the Grade II* listed museum building. The resulting galleries will be interactive, multi-sensory, exciting and fun for all ages. BMAG recently submitted a Stage 2 Heritage Lottery Fund bid, and if successful the new galleries will open to the public in the autumn of 2012.
