FREE family fun at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, hands-on ‘Come Create’ exhibition at Thinktank and kids workshops and crafts across Birmingham’s historic sites
This summer, Birmingham Museums is offering its visitors a collection of exhibitions, events and activities to enlighten and entertain all ages. At Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, there are FREE fun family trails, giving young visitors the chance to explore some of the most popular historic and art objects in the museum. In addition, Monday - Friday over the summer break (21 July – 29 August) there will be craft activities, allowing budding artists to make and take home some beautiful artwork of their very own (charges apply). Over at the Gas Hall, visitors can step inside a whimsical, wonderful word of cartoons and contraptions in ‘Marvellous Machines’. This extraordinary exhibition is the largest ever exhibition of machines and drawings by creator and inventor Rowland Emett, best known for his contraptions featured in the film ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ (admission charges apply to Marvellous Machines)
Over at Thinktank, Birmingham science museum, visitors can explore thousands of fascinating objects and hundreds of hands-on exhibitions on science and discovery, plus an amazing outdoor Science Garden. Over the summer, visitors are invited to get in touch with their inventive side in the new ‘Come Create’ exhibition. Open daily until 7 September, ‘Come Create’ combines some of the more extraordinary creations from Birmingham’s own collection, alongside fun hands-on activities for all ages. From bubble cars to ball runs, moving sculptures to motorised art activities there is something to inspire the inventor in everyone!
Across Birmingham’s historic sites, there are some great indoor and outdoor activities for all to enjoy. There are special Circus Academy workshops at Thinktank (Tues 29 July), Aston Hall (Weds 13 Aug), Soho House (Thurs 21 Aug), Blakesley Hall (Thurs 28 Aug) and the Museums Collections Centre (Sun 14 Sept). Visitors can learn all sorts of circus skills including acrobatics, juggling and high wire. Other activities include craft workshops at the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Knight School at Blakesley Hall (Sat 6 Sept) and messing with boats at Sarehole Mill (Sat 23 Aug). Charges apply.
