15th February 2013
This February half-term, museums across Birmingham are offering visitors a whole host of inspiring events and fun workshops to keep all the family entertained all day. From the exciting new We Made It gallery at Thinktank, through to a Staffordshire Hoard Family Day at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Animalmania at Blakesley Hall, there is something to satisfy curious and creative minds of all ages.
Visitors to Thinktank from 16th February will be able to make rubber ducks, stamp pennies, photograph themselves in an array of crowns and jewellery and enjoy many other interactive exhibits in the new We Made It gallery. The new development takes visitors on a journey from raw materials to finished products and highlights the heritage and science of manufacturing and materials in the region. The museum’s Science Garden will also be reopened after its winter hibernation, bringing themes of engineering, mechanics and transportation to life through three fun zones and 42 hands-on exhibits.
Over at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, visitors can join the team or a special day of activities celebrating the fascinating Staffordshire Hoard. There will be lots to do and see - you can meet an Anglo-Saxon living history group, listen to some music and try on armour. Our experts from the Conservation team will be running special hands-on activities and showing you how they look after the very precious Staffordshire Hoard - could you be a future conservator? Have a go at trying out some real techniques. You can also visit the fantastic history galleries, which only opened last October and are packed with interesting facts, exhibits and personal stories which tell the story of Birmingham.
For a family fun day, why not join visit Aston Hall? The venue is open for one day during February half term – February 19th - and you can go along and meet the servants as they get the Hall ready for the return of Sir Thomas Holte, the master of the house, from London. For £2 you can meet some interesting characters and take part in crafts. Or pay Blakesley Hall a visit on 20th February and, for just £1 (in addition to normal entry fees), you can get involved with Animalmania and see a variety of creatures including snakes, lizards, giant rabbits and other unusual animals.
