One of the biggest museum stores in the UK, Birmingham Museums Collections Centre once again opens it doors to the public on Sunday 13 May 2012.

Described by some as an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ and others as ‘Indiana Jones meets IKEA’, the Museum Collections Centre is home to a vast array  of fascinating objects, which Birmingham Museums do not have space to display on a permanent basis.

Phil Watson, Collections Manager of Birmingham Museums Trust said; “We are looking forward to another popular Open Day at the Collections Centre. The diverse nature of the collections that we look after really appeals to the curious visitor, and feedback shows that the Open Day is enjoyed by all ages, from 5 to 93. It’s great to see three generations visiting as a family group.”

Whatever your area of interest, visitors of all ages will find something to appeal. See items from the transport collection such as a 1901 Benz car, an inventive bin lorry from the 1930s, steam, and almost every kind of engine, and machinery from some of the famous industrial names of Birmingham’s past. And from washing and sewing machines through to early mangles, telephones and music boxes, visitors can discover the reality of domestic life in ages gone by.

For the more artistic, there are many examples of classical and modern sculpture including over 10,000 pots from around the world from many different periods. Visitors are invited to peruse objects from ancient Egypt, along with a great collection of fashion items including shoes and handbags.  

This is a great opportunity for visitors of all ages to see how the objects of Birmingham currently not on display are being cared for and preserved.

Birmingham Museum Collections Centre will be open from 11.00am - 5.00pm (last admission 4.30pm). Admission is free of charge.
