Black History Month Event at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Black History Month Event at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

10th October 2011

Curatorial Talk "Keith Piper, The Ghosts of Christendom'' October 28th.

On October 28th there will be a talk on "Keith Piper, The Ghosts of Christendom'' by Fine Art Curator Victoria Osborne. This talk is part of the Black History Month programme in Birmingham.

This gallery talk introduces his powerful computer montage, 'The Ghosts of Christendom' (1990), in which Piper confronts the relationship between Western Christian society and the Slave Trade.

Keith Piper was a founder member of the radical BLK group of Black artists formed in the 1980s.  Their work explored issues around race and representation, and was deliberately challenging: Piper wrote that his aim was to 'raise an issue or a notion or an argument, and to confront you with it in the hope that it may shake you out of your complacency.'

The talk takes place in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery at 1pm on October 28th. Tickets are £2.00 per person and are available on the day.
