FRIENDS OF BIRMINGHAM MUSEUMS

Since 1931, the Association of Friends has supported Birmingham Museums Trust by raising money to help finance BMT’s acquisitions. Some Members also volunteer their services as researchers, cataloguers and administrators (to name but a few) on a range of BMT projects.

The Friends give around £25,000 a year to BMT, raised through subscriptions, events and outings, and donations.

This money goes towards everything from buying and commissioning new works, to funding important development programmes, such as Aston Hall, Soho House, Blakesley Hall and the Birmingham History Galleries.

The money donated has also been instrumental in levering much larger sums of external funding (from bodies such as the V&A Purchase Fund, the Art Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund and local charities) for acquisitions and development. In making these outside approaches, it is helpful for BMT to demonstrate the positive support of a dedicated and hard working Friends’ Association. As a Registered Charity, the Friends are able to act as a channel for substantial donations towards major purchases and exhibitions.

The Friends occasionally commission works by both established and young artists and craftspeople and have helped BMT develop the collection of Contemporary Art.
