Metropolis: reflections on the modern city

Visions of the modern global city by some of the world's most exciting artists, Metropolis brings together stunning work by 25 contemporary artists of the highest international standing to Birmingham and includes digital projection, painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media installation. 

Metropolis: Reflections on the modern city is a major showcase of international contemporary artwork jointly collected by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the New Art Gallery, Walsall and developed in partnership with Ikon Gallery, as part of the £1 million Art Fund International initiative. Now shown together for the first time, these works represent an ambitious and nationally-significant new collection for Birmingham, Walsall and the West Midlands.

tempus ruhr by Rocco Helmchen (23 min)
Every Thursday between 28^th March and 20^th June, 17.30pm – 18.00pm at Thinktank dome club. 
Described as a 'nightshift portrait' of the Ruhr Metropolis, this 360˚film is a beautiful time-lapse journey through a single night of Europe's Capital of Culture 2010. Please note this is shown in Thinktank’s Fulldome planetarium. Tickets are £1 online or at the door – book through ThinkTank.

Collecting Metropolis: special exhibition talk
Wednesday 1^st May. 1pm in the Gas Hall. 
Hear about the fascinating Metropolis collection and how it was acquired by BM&AG and the New Art Gallery Walsall from artists based all around the world. Tickets are £2 and are available on the day from Gas Hall.

Invisible Architecture walking tour
Saturday 1st June. 12pm - 1.30pm (meet in Gas Hall from 11.45am).
On the Invisible Architecture guided tour, local Historian Ben Waddington lifts the veil and allows a glimpse of what lies beneath... seeing what is there can change the way you feel about the city. Please note this event is an outdoor walking tour around Birmingham so attendees must be happy to walk/stand for 80 mins. Tickets are £5 – please book via the Box Office.

Kino 10 – City Living (90min)
Saturday 22^nd June.  2.30pm - 4.30pm in the AV room (Gas Hall).
KINO 10 takes us on a filmic journey through various cities around the world with this selection of short films. Tickets are £5 – please book via the Box Office.
