Exploring Muslim Cultures at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
17th April 2009
'Journeys: a gallery trail exploring Muslim cultures' is a trail Guide highlighting the richness of Muslim cultures and the Museum's collection.
Developed in partnership with Ulfah Arts and people from local Muslim communities. The group was formed specifically for the project. Members gave up their own time to meet regularly at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and visit museums in London. They contributed to all aspects of the Guide and developed their own personal interpretation of objects and art works in the Museum collection.
The Guide includes work by Muslim artists, which draws on Islamic heritage and tradition, objects originating from countries with Muslim cultures, and works by Western artists and designers which take aspects of Muslim cultures as sources of inspiration and influence.
The Guide for all visitors highlights the richness of Muslim cultures and the Museum collection, and provides a trail to follow throughout the galleries. It gives information and new perspectives on the objects and artworks, including the personal responses of group members. They have made connections with their own interests and experiences, bringing the collection to life and communicating its relevance to visitors in Birmingham today.
